Instructions for Baking Burgers
James Schend, the deputy editor of Taste of Home, shared his go-to recipe for quick and easy hamburgers. Read James’s recommendations for the best ground beef to make burgers.
Ingredients:
- 1,300 grams of beef mince
- Salinity, 3/4 teaspoon
- Pepper, 14 teaspoon
- Four buttered and cut hamburger buns
- Lettuce leaves, sliced tomato, sliced onion, bacon, and mayonnaise are available as condiments.
A total of 4 burgers may be made using this recipe.
Tools:
- Bowl
- In a sheet pan
- Spatula
- Thermometer
- Griddle made of cast iron.
Directions:
The First Step: Forming the Burgers
Get the oven going at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Put the beef into a big basin and crumble it with your hands. The steak should be cut into four equal pieces at this point.
Form the meat into 1-inch-thick discs, being careful not to overwork it. The beef may be formed into patties without any further effort. Make a slight indentation in the center with your thumb to keep the patties from collapsing during cooking.
Put the patties on a platter, cover them, and chill until the oven is ready.
The temptation to season the ground beef with salt and pepper before forming patties is understandable, but resist the urge! The burgers will become rough and dry if salt is used. Beef is best when seasoned right before being cooked. Read on for more ways to enhance the flavor of your burgers.
The Second Step: Put on some seasoning and pop it in the oven
Butter or oil a baking sheet gently and place it in an oven preheated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Take the burgers out of the fridge and liberally sprinkle salt and pepper on both sides of the patties. The next step is to arrange the patties on the baking sheet without touching them but still in a single layer.
If you like rare burgers, bake them at 135 degrees Fahrenheit for 7 minutes, medium for 10 minutes, well done for 15 minutes, or medium-well for 20 minutes. This complete guide to food temperature looks at the best temperature ranges for storing food safely. You don’t have a thermometer that gives you quick results? Buy a ThermoPop from ThermoWorks; it’s the favorite thermometer of our Test Kitchen.
Put a piece of cheese on each burger patty for the final minute of cooking time.
The Third Step: Toast the rolls
Toast the buns while the burgers are in the oven. Butter the cut buns and cook them in a cast-iron pan set over medium heat. For a minute or two, toast the cut side of the buns until they are golden brown. Toasting the buns in batches is probably going to be necessary.
Instead of using the standard, thin buns in the bread section, this editor recommends upgrading your burgers to light and airy brioche or pretzel bun. They taste better and stay together better than regular buns. Alternatively, you may attempt your hand at baking burger buns from scratch.
The Fourth Step: Put It Together and Have Fun with It!
After the cooking time is up, take the burgers out of the oven and place them on the warmed buns. Easy and delicious, add your topping and dig in.
Techniques for Serving Oven-Baked Burgers
Spicy ketchup, mustard, caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, and handmade pickles are some of our favorite burger toppings, but there’s no wrong way to serve a burger. Here are some more creative options for burger toppings to help spark your imagination.
These baked burgers go well with a crisp side salad, baked French fries, air-fried sweet potato fries, or onion rings.
Preserving and freezing oven-baked burgers
You may keep leftover burgers in the refrigerator for up to four days. Just make sure the container is airtight so they don’t go wrong.
Preparing a few burgers in advance by freezing the uncooked patties is a fantastic alternative for people who wish to do some meal prep. Separate the meat into smaller pieces and shape it into patties as usual. Next, lay the raw burger patties on a baking sheet coated with plastic wrap or parchment paper, wrap tightly, and freeze until solid.
When the patties are frozen, take them off the baking sheet and store them in a freezer-safe container. The patties have a four-month shelf life when refrigerated. Read on for details on how long ground beef may be frozen and other methods for extending its shelf life.
To use the frozen burgers, bake the frozen patties according to the instructions above, extending the cooking time as necessary to get a thermometer reading of 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
Grilled Burger Recipes
Which method, oven or stovetop, yields the best burgers?
What you like is entirely up to you! If you want to avoid the mess and the stench of frying meat, try baking your burgers instead.
However, burgers cooked in a cast-iron pan get a delicious sear that is impossible to achieve with any other cooking method. And if it’s already warm outside, making burgers on the stovetop is preferable to baking them since it won’t heat the house as much.
It’s unclear why a handprint would be desirable on a burger.
As was previously said, making a small hole in the center of a burger patty allows air to flow around the burger, keeping it from shrinking too much while cooking. That way, the burger won’t get overcooked in the middle and will have a flatter appearance. One of the best burger tricks we learned from a restaurant cook was to make a dimple.
Do you think I could use other kinds of meat for cooking burgers in the oven?
Definitely! Follow the exact amounts and instructions for the ingredients, but cook for a shorter time at a lower temperature. Burger patties made from chicken or turkey should be baked at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 20 minutes or until an instant-read thermometer registers 165 degrees Fahrenheit in the center.
Even meatless burgers may be cooked in the oven. Chickpea burgers must be baked for around 10 to 15 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit or until the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees.
Our kitchen has identified the most incredible vegan burger brand, by the way.
Mastering the oven method for burgers is a significant first step, but mastering the grill will ensure that your burgers come out juicy and flavorful every time.
